Service members will be able to choose their retirement plans starting Jan. 1, 2018.
This decision only applies to those who joined after 2006. Service members with 12 years of service or more will remain on the current system. Those who join the military after Jan. 1, 2018 will automatically be enrolled in BRS. The opt-in period for the Blended Retirement System (BRS) will end Dec. 31, 2018. Sign up will be done online using resources such as MyPay or Marines Online (MOL), depending on your branch of service. No action is required for most service members if they would like to remain in the current retirement system.
