KENNEBEC RIVER (April 8, 2024) The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) USS John Basilone (DDG 122) transits the Kennebec River to the sea to conduct Bravo Trials. This is the second U.S. Navy vessel named after Basilone, the first being USS Basilone (DD-824), a Gearing-class destroyer commissioned in 1949 and decommissioned in 1977. U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater during World War II.
