NAVAL STATION NORFOLK (March 17, 2024) U.S. Navy chaplain Lt. Joshua Henderson baptizes his son on the flight deck of the world's largest aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), at Naval Station Norfolk, March 17, 2024. The custom of baptizing a child in the ship's bell originated in the Royal Navy. The bell is filled with water and used as a christening bowl for the ceremony, after which the child's name is etched onto the bell. Gerald R. Ford is in port at Naval Station Norfolk following an eight-month deployment to U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.
