ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY (Dec. 21, 2023) Adm. Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations, left, and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy James Honea, render a hand salute to Medal of Honor recipient Seaman 1st Class James Richard Ward during a ceremony where he is laid to rest in the Arlington National Cemetery, Dec. 21, 2023. Ward was awarded the Medal of Honor, posthumously, in 1942 for his acts of valor during the attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. In 2003, the USS Oklahoma Project set out to identify the Sailors' remains that were lost with the Nevada-class battleship. On Feb. 22, 2022, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced that it had positively identified Ward’s remains on Aug. 19, 2021.
