NAVAL BASE SAN DIEGO (Oct. 27, 2023) Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Carlos Del Toro watches a Navy sea lion exercise on a pier during a visit to Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific at Naval Base San Diego, Oct. 27, 2023). The U.S. Navy's Marine Mammal Program (NMMP) trains California sea lions to detect, locate, mark, and recover objects in harbors, coastal areas, and depths in the open sea. NIWC Pacific's mission supports research, development, prototyping, engineering, test and evaluation, installation, and sustainment of integrated information warfare capabilities across all warfighting domains. SECNAV has charged NIWC Pacific as the lead laboratory supporting the Navy Marine Mammal Program, requiring the highest quality care and treatment for the Navy's marine mammals.
