Celebrated on the third Saturday of May, Armed Forces Day is one of many military-themed holidays during the month of May, Military Appreciation Month. August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day in replacement of the separate Army, Navy, and Air Force Days.
