ATLANTIC OCEAN (May 20, 2023) The guided-missile destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) fires a Standard Missile (SM) 2 during a joint engagement with USS Porter (DDG-78), not pictured, while underway in the North Atlantic Ocean, May 20, 2023. The engagement demonstrated the joint capacity of naval forces to face multiple threats. Oscar Austin is underway conducting exercise Formidable Shield 2023, a biennial, integrated air and missile defense exercise involving a series of live-fire events against subsonic, supersonic, and ballistic targets, incorporating multiple Allied ships, aircraft, and ground forces.
