ATLANTIC OCEAN (May 19, 2023) Line handlers aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) adjust the phone and distance line during an underway replenishment with the Spanish navy support ship ESPS Patiño (A-14) in the North Atlantic Ocean, May 19, 2023. The phone and distance line is used to assist bridge watch-standers in determining lateral separation from the replenishment ship. Oscar Austin is underway in support of the NATO exercise Formidable Shield, a biennial integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) exercise involving a series of live-fire events against subsonic, supersonic, and ballistic targets, incorporating multiple Allied ships, aircraft, and ground forces.
