Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Lorin Selby, leading the ONR and ONR Global S&T delegation to Chile, helps launch the Women in STEM/STEAM Initiative at Liceo Tecnologico School in Villa Alemana, near Valparaiso, Chile. Selby spoke to middle school, junior high and high school students, teachers and administrators about the importance of giving students access to quality educational tools. The ONR Global-sponsored Women in STEM/STEAM project is a three-year grant designed to encourage students at Liceo Tecnologico to consider global problem-solving careers in "STEAM": science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the arts. The initiative will also feature a digital fabrication laboratory — Fab Lab — outfitted with 3D printers, laser-cutting machines and rapid-prototyping equipment that will allow the students to engage in creative, innovative design projects. The ONR Global office in Santiago, Chile, is overseeing the project in partnership with the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso, as well as multiple educational organizations in Villa Alemana and Valparaiso.
