PACIFIC OCEAN (Aug. 7, 2022) Hull Maintenance 1st Class Jose Rodriguez welds parts of the sterngate aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). The sterngate opens the welldeck doors allowing for the Makin Island and 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to operate seamlessly and simultaneously on the sea and ashore. Makin Island, flagship of Amphibious Squadron (CPR) SEVEN, along with 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), is currently underway conducting integrated training in the U.S. 3rd fleet to prepare for an upcoming deployment.
