An undated image of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut (left), who led the naval Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War, and Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger (right), who commanded Army forces participating in the battle. Granger was later appointed the U.S. military commander in Texas and, on June 19, 1865, read a proclamation announcing slaves in the state were free.
