STOCKHOLM (June 2, 2022) Spanish navy Lt. j.g. Maria Fernandez stands navigation watch aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) during BALTOPS 22. Fernandez is assigned to Porter as part of the U.S. Navy's Personnel Exchange Program (PEP), which allows selected Sailors to conduct a one-for-one exchange with personnel from a foreign military with the goal of developing improved understanding of each other's capabilities. BALTOPS 22 is the premier maritime-focused exercise in the Baltic Region. The exercise, led by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, and executed by Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO, provides a unique training opportunity to strengthen combined response capabilities critical to preserving freedom of navigation and security in the Baltic Sea.
