NORFOLK, Va. (Oct. 28, 2021) Naval Support Activity (NSA) Hampton Roads Public Works Environmental Department celebrated National Public Lands Day on Oct. 28 with volunteers from Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Atlantic, NSA Hampton Roads 1st Lieutenant Division, Norfolk Naval Shipyard and the Elizabeth River Project. The installation applied for and received a grant from the National Environmental Education Foundation to plant native switch grass, little blue stem and several species of trees on the Lafayette River Annex. The main focus was the pavilion, where switch grass and little blue stems were planted around the perimeter. These plants both absorb pollutants from runoff and provide habitat and food for birds, pollinators and many other species. Once well established, the switch grass and little blue stem should form a hedgerow, with the hopes of preventing Canada geese from picnicking under the pavilion as well.
