SAN DIEGO (May 14, 2021) Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Luis Fonseca, assigned to Naval Medicine Readiness and Training Unit Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego, gives remarks during a retirement ceremony held at MCRD San Diego. Fonseca was the Navy's most decorated active duty hospital corpsman, and received the Navy Cross as a hospitalman apprentice for extraordinary heroism while serving with the First Marine Expeditionary Force in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, March 23, 2003. Fonseca and his wife, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Christina Fonseca (ret.), who officially retired in Feb. 2021, retired together in a joint ceremony, and have a combined 46 years of Naval service.
