SAN DIEGO (Jan. 27, 2020) Hospitalman Joel Thompson (front), a surgical technologist (left), and Lt. j.g. Alessa Andersen, a registered nurse (center), both assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego's (NMCSD) Main Operating Room, clean a laparoscopic camera lens during a robotic-assisted laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair procedure in one of the hospital's operating rooms Jan. 27. Robotic surgical systems, like those used at NMCSD, allow surgeons to perform minimally-invasive procedures, and this procedure was performed during a remote, tele-mentoring study. NMCSDs mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
