WATERBURY, Conn. (Jan. 8, 2021) Secretary of the Navy Kenneth J. Braithwaite, right, presents the Navy Cross to Monsignor John Bevins during an award ceremony honoring Navy Chaplain Lt. Thomas M. Conway at the Basilica of Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, Conn. Monsignor Bevins, a retired Navy Captain and former senior rector at the Basilica, was accepting the medal on behalf of Conway. Conway was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his heroic efforts aboard the USS Indianapolis (CA 35) when it was attacked and sunk by an enemy submarine in 1945.
