SAN DIEGO (Jan. 6, 2021) Cmdr. Shawn Belverud, a neurosurgeon, left, and Lt. Cmdr. Scott Donoughe, a neurology resident, both assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), perform a herniated disk repair procedure utilizing a 3D surgical microscope. The new 3D surgical microscope can be used in a traditional, superficial manner, exoscopically and endoscopically. 3D glasses and 4K monitors allows those not physically beside the operating table to see a stereoscopic view during a procedure. This was the first procedure at NMCSD that used a 3D surgical microscope. NMCSD�s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research.
