SAN DIEGO (Sept. 7, 2020) Aircrew prepare an MH-60S Sea Hawk attached to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3 to depart from Naval Air Station North Island, Calif., to assist California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and their unified cooperators, the U.S. Forest Service, with firefighting efforts during the Valley Fire in San Diego County. Since 2011, U.S. Third Fleet, Naval Air Forces Pacific and Navy Region Southwest entered into a memorandum of understanding with CAL FIRE. Under the agreement, naval units provide helicopters when notified by CAL FIRE of weather conditions favorable to wildfires. Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Pacific prepares ready, trained and certified resources to combat wildfires and crews conduct semi-annual training with CAL FIRE to ensure an immediate response capability in support of local authorities for emergency events.
