Samuel Lee Gravely during a Black History Month celebration aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Laboon (DDG 58). Gravely was the first African- American in the U.S. Navy to serve aboard a fighting ship as an officer, he was the first to command a Navy ship, the first fleet commander, and the first African-American to become a flag officer. Laboon is underway conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe.
