161221-N-LR795-017 GULF OF ADEN (Dec. 21, 2016) Members of Fleet Surgical Team (FST) 5 and the USS Somerset (LPD 25) medical team prepare to conduct the first surgery ever performed aboard the amphibious transport dock ship. FST 5 is embarked aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) in order to enhance surgical, casualty receiving, and trauma treatment capabilities across the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). Somerset is deployed with the Makin Island and 11th MEU to support maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
