161107-M-GM943-150 PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 8, 2016) A Marine with Battalion Landing Team 1st Bn., 4th Marines, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, fast-ropes out the back of an MV-22 Osprey during helicopter rope suspension technique (HRST) training conducted aboard the USS Makin Island (LHD 8), while afloat in the Pacific Ocean, Nov. 8, 2016. The purpose of employing a fast-rope as a means of insertion onto a designated landing zone is to allow the Marines on-board to quickly exit the aircraft, shortening the amount of time it remains vulnerable at the LZ and mitigating the risk of friendly casualties and damage to the aircraft from potential enemy fire. The 11th MEU, part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility in support security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
