SAN DIEGO (Oct. 14, 2016) — A tugboat assists amphibious assault landing ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) as it departs the pier from Naval Station San Diego for a scheduled deployment. Makin Island is a part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, which will serve in the U.S. 3rd, 5th, and 7th Fleet area of operation, providing maritime security operations, crisis response capability, theater security cooperation and forward naval presence.
