161005-N-OI810-150 PHILIPPINE SEA (Oct. 5, 2016) Sailors load an MK 82/BLU 111 500-pound bomb onto an F/A-18E Super Hornet assigned to the "Eagles" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 115 on the flight deck of the Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). The MK-80 series general-purpose bomb family was created in the late 1940s and has been the standard air-launched bomb for the services ever since. The general-purpose bomb family is designed to provide blast and fragmentation effects and is used extensively in a number of configurations, including laser-guided bombs, joint direct attack munitions, and air-delivered mining applications. Ronald Reagan, the Carrier Strike Group Five (CSG 5) flagship, is on patrol supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
