(March 31, 2016 Chief and first class petty officers assigned to Naval Station (NAVSTA) Newport and U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, pick up debris as part of a CPO 365 base beautification project onboard NAVSTA Newport. The event was organized as part of the week’s events to honor the 123rd birthday of the chief petty officer (CPO). The grade of CPO was established April 1, 1893, and encompassed nine rates; Chief Master-at-Arms, Chief Boatswain’s Mate, Chief Quartermaster, Chief Gunner’s Mate, Chief Machinist, Chief Carpenter’s Mate, Chief Yeoman and Apothecary.
