160224-N-UM054-006 MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.(February 24, 2016) Dr. Emily Vanides, an audiologist in the Audiology Clinic at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, preps Cheyenne Duchesneau for a newborn hearing screening while her parents look on. One of the many responsibilities of the Audiology Clinic is to identify infants with hearing loss prior to one month of age. The Audiology Clinic screens more than 1,660 infants per year with the Automated Brainstem Evoked Auditory Response (ABEAR) test. An infant identified with hearing loss may have difficulty developing normal speech and language skills; therefore it is necessary to identify hearing loss early and refer infant and family for special intervention services.
