171024-N-JW440-0122 FARAJADO, Puerto Rico (Oct. 24, 2017) Rachel Wennekame, part of the Disaster Medical Team from HHS (Human Health Services) discusses emergency medical service overflow relief efforts with Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Elliot Rodriguez-Diaz, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), during a family assessment in Puerto Rico. Wasp Sailors with ties to Puerto Rico had the opportunity to go ashore to meet family members and assess the current relief support being provided and ascertain infrastructure information. Wasp is assisting with relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. The Department of Defense is supporting the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the lead federal agency, in helping those affected by Hurricane Maria to minimize suffering and is one component of the overall whole-of-government response effort.
