It was the 12th and last ship in the Austin-class of amphibious transport dock ships and was commissioned in 1971. After being forward deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operation for the past five years, the "Proud Lion" returned to her homeport in September for decommissioning and dismantling.
