170929-N-VK310-0012 CARIBBEAN SEA (Sept. 29, 2017) Sailors attached to Fleet Surgical Team (FST) 2 escort rescued residents of French Guadalupe and Antigua to the flight deck prior to departing the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) en route to the island of Guadalupe. The passengers were rescued by Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 22 personnel after their private aircraft crashed into the water off the coast of Dominica on Sept. 28. Wasp is participating in humanitarian relief efforts in the Caribbean Sea following the landfall of Hurricane Maria. The Department of Defense is supporting the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the lead federal agency, in helping those affected by Hurricane Maria to minimize suffering and is one component of the overall whole-of-government response effort.
