170807-N-UB993-0027 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (August 07, 2017) Chief petty officer (CPO) selects ask permission from the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), Commanding Officer, Capt. Eric Pfister, to commission the CPO 365 training ship, USS Tomich, during a ceremony aboard the ship. The Tomich will join the other six ships already incorporated into CPO 365 training and will be the lead ship until the chief pinning ceremony September 15. CPO 365 is a year-round training initiative that Chiefs Messes throughout the Navy take on to prepare first class petty officers to become chiefs. The USS Tomich is named after Chief Watertender Peter Tomich, who gave his life to save his shipmates aboard the USS Utah during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. The ship and its ready group are deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations to reassure allies and partners, and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
