181013-N-HI707-4655 NORFOLK (Oct. 13, 2018) A Sailor assigned to the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Newport News (SSN 750) is greeted by a loved one at Naval Station Norfolk after returning from a seven-month deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations. Newport News is the third ship U.S. Navy ship to be named for Newport News, Virginia. The contract to build it was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, on April 19, 1982 and its keel was laid down on March 3, 1984.
