181013-N-HI707-4457 NORFOLK (Oct. 13, 2018) Sailors assigned to Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 6 stand pierside to welcome home the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Newport News (SSN 750) as it returns to Naval Station Norfolk following the completion of a seven-month deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations. Newport News is the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for Newport News, Virginia. The contract to build her was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, on 19 April 1982, her keel was laid down on 3 March 1984, and commissioned on 3 June 1989.
