180927-N-TG517-001 NORFOLK (Sept. 27, 2018) USS Constitution, the U.S. Navy’s oldest commissioned vessel, underwent a drydock period from 1973-1974 prior to her bicentennial celebration. During that time, large pieces of red oak were removed and replaced with white oak, including pieces of the deck and hull ribs. Tony D’Angelo, a museum volunteer with the Hampton Roads Naval Museum in Norfolk, Va., was able to receive a piece. D'Angelo graciously loaned the piece to Lee Martin, a volunteer model ship builder, who is working on a model of the USS Constitution.
