Richardson who earned his dolphins aboard the USS Scorpion (SSN 589) in 1962, participate in a memorial ceremony for the 50th anniversary of the loss of the USS Scorpion. In 1968, the Richardson family hosted the Scorpion wardroom at their home in Naples, Italy, the last port visit before the Scorpion's loss. The ceremony took was conducted at the Scorpion Memorial at Naval Station Norfolk, and was attended by over 500 family members, friends and Shipmates of the 99 crewmembers lost.
