(May 18, 2018) Master Chief Ian Thompson, prospective command master chief of the guided-missile destroyer USS Delbert Black (DDG 119), presents a framed Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) pennant to Ima J. Black, widow of the ship's namesake, at the Naval Station Mayport Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Club. Although the purpose of Black's visit was to transfer the combination cover of her late husband, Delbert Black, to USS Delbert Black, the Mayport Area CPO Mess threw her a surprise party to celebrate her 97th birthday. Delbert Black was the first MCPON, and Ima, a member of the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service), is the First Lady of the Navy Chief Mess and an honorary master chief.
