190412-N-CL765-1001 U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (April 12, 2019) Lt. j. g. Harvey Mercado, a Naval flight officer attached to Patrol Squadron (VP) 40, loads navigation and communication systems at his station to prepare for a flight. VP-40 is deployed to the U.S. 5th and 7th fleet areas of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security. VP-40 is the last active-duty squadron to fly the P-3C Orion aircraft and after this deployment will transition to the P-8 Poseidon.
