190410-N-YG104-0027 WASHINGTON (April 10, 2019) Logistics Specialist 1st Class Sindy Johnson delivers remarks after being announced the Fiscal Year 2018 Navy Shore Sailor of the Year (SOY). In her remarks she spoke about her family's journey from Nicaragua that led to her proudly serving in the United States Navy. She thanked her father for his sacrifices, which included his return to their home country in order for her family to sustain a new life in the United States. The program was established in 1972 by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Whittet to recognize an individual Sailor who best represented the ever-growing group of dedicated professional Sailors at each command and ultimately the Navy. Shore SOY finalists participated in a variety of personal and professional evaluations as well as leadership, naval heritage and team-building events throughout the week around Washington D.C.
