Mike Bernacchi, commander of Naval Service Training Command, reacts after being pinned as an honorary U.S. Navy chief petty officer by Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Russell Smith during opening remarks of the 2019 Great Lakes Region Chief Petty Officer Symposium at Recruit Training Command. Only the MCPON may authorize the honorary chief petty officer recognition, which is intended to recognize sustained superior engagement with, and contributions to the collective U.S. Navy chief petty officer community and enlisted force. The symposium is in celebration of the 126th birthday of the chief petty officer. More than 35,000 recruits train annually at the Navy's only boot camp.
