(March 28, 2019) Laurie King, assistant conservator at the The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Monitor National Marine Sanctuary at the Mariners' Museum and Park, works to restore a rubber gasket from the USS Monitor. The Monitor, which sank off the coast of North Carolina in 1862, is scheduled to have its turret mounted on a new support structure by Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding, a milestone in the ships conservation process.
