190315-N-TF088-1014 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (March 15, 2019) Sailors assigned to the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) look up at the newly installed main mast during the mast-stepping ceremony on George Washington's flight deck. Mast-stepping is an ancient Greek and Roman practice of putting coins at the base of the mast of a ship still under construction. George Washington is undergoing refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipyard. RCOH is a nearly four-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling of the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repair, upgrades and modernization.
