190312-N-GQ458-1193 SAN DIEGO (March 11, 2019) Aircrew Survival Equipmentman 1st Class Bryan Zielke, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), fires an M9 pistol during a practical training drill at Poway Weapons & Gear Range during the Makin Island security forces sustainment course. Every year, Sailors that are authorized to carry a weapon must sustain their qualification. Makin Island, homeported in San Diego, is conducting a depot-level maintenance availability.
