(April 6, 2020) Quartermaster Seaman Samuel Koeller, from Somerset, Wis., takes readings from an alidade aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) as the ship moves out of Dry Dock 6 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility. Alidades measure, in degrees, the ship�s direction in relation to fixed locations on the surrounding land, and watch standers use a mathematical formula to locate the ship�s geological position to ensure safe transit. Vinson has completed the dry docked portion of its scheduled maintenance and will complete the rest of the availability floating pierside in Bremerton, Wash.
