200307-M-OP674-0359 NORFOLK (March 7, 2020) Sailors man the ship during the commissioning ceremony for the expeditionary sea base USS Hershel "Woody" Williams (ESB 4). The ship was named after retired U.S. Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer 4 Hershel Williams, a then corporal whose acts of heroism in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II earned him the highest decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor. Marine Corps Forces South continues to assess different amphibious and non-traditional naval platforms to enable Marine deployments in the western hemisphere, increasing naval readiness and ability to integrate with our partners.
